Facilities & Projects
Rentech Energy Midwest Corporation (REMC), located in East Dubuque, Illinois, manufactures a variety of nitrogen fertilizer products. This facility has been operating for over 40 years and is one of the largest producers of ammonia fertilizer products in the upper Midwest, which is the largest corn-growing region in the world. REMC provides nutrients for over 4 million acres of farmland, which equates to approximately 5% of 2009 forecasted corn acres. Our products help meet the increasing need for nitrogen to restore the fertility and productivity of the soil. In addition to helping to maximize land productivity, a portion of the corn grown by Midwestern farmers using our fertilizer products supports the ethanol industry. Thus, REMC also supports Rentech’s mission of helping America to reduce its dependency on foreign oil for transportation fuels.
REMC sells over 600,000 tons of nitrogen products including anhydrous ammonia, liquid and granular urea, nitrogen solutions (urea ammonium nitrate solution or UAN). Most of these products are sold to growers and other customers within a 150 mile radius of our plant. Our proximity to our customers provides REMC with a competitive advantage over imported fertilizer manufacturers. In addition, REMC sells nitric acid to industrial customers and carbon dioxide to the food and beverage industry.
REMC currently uses natural gas as the feedstock for its products. Rentech is exploring the possibility of converting the facility to coal gasification should economic and public policy factors favor the conversion.
